Trainings on Sludge Management and Energy Optimization in Can Tho, May 2019

On May 21st, 2019, in Can Tho city, with support of the Vietnam-Germany Cooperation Project on Capacity Building for Water Sector (DEVIWAS), VWSA Training Center organized two training courses on Sludge Management and Energy Optimization. 
 
Participating in 2 classes, there were 87 participants who were General Directors/ Deputy General Directors, Directors/Deputy Directors, and Heads of Technical Department, Planning Department as well as relevant managers from 13 water utilities operating in the field of water supply and drainage in Southern Vietnam.

Biological wastewater treatment is applied worldwide for municipal and industrial effluents with great success in hundreds of thousands of plants. However, those plants (WWTP) are cost intensive and complex due to recycle flows, strongly fluctuating wastewater qualities and quantities, industrial discharges and the biological processes by itself. The consumption of electric energy is huge portion in the budget of municipalities. The treatment and disposal of the resulting excess sludge is additionally cost intensive and due to its characteristics (e.g. heavy metals, odor, nutrients) sensitive to handle and to dispose/utilize. Therefore, the optimization of WWTP by reduction of energy consumption and sludge management is addressed in these 2 trainings. 

Specifically, training on Sludge Management was held at the Head Office of Can Tho Water Supply and Sewerage Joint Stock Company under the coaching of Prof. Geissen from Berlin Technical University - Germany, who was senior expert of DEVEWAS project.
 
    

The class attracted high attention and active participation of trainees. Both the trainer and trainees exchanged information on environmental and sustainable sludge management, including: origin and production of sludge, biological treatment processes including stabilization and digestion, as well as energy optimization using self-generating energy (through the process of sludge treatment) to feed energy demand of the entire plant towards net zero energy demand and sustainable sludge management.

With other training on Energy Optimization, which was held nearby the above training, i.e. at the Doan An Duong Hall, participants had an effective guidance and discussion of MSc. Schweimanns, who was also expert of DEVIWAS Project from Berlin Technical University - Germany.
 
    

Participating in the class, participants learned different perspective of energy demands in wastewater treatment plants, as well as German experience in optimizing energy use through simulation of software called SIMBA in order to move towards net zero energy demand and sustainable development.

At the end of the trainings, participants were invited to visit the mobile laboratory (Mobilab) and observe actual operation and monitoring process on testing/measuring basic water indicators. This Mobilab is one of three equipped with most advanced  testing equipment, funded by the German Government for Vietnam.
