Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association visits German Water Partnership

From 7 to 10 September, a group of representatives of Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA) led by Mr. Cao Lai Quang, President of VWSA visited German Water Partnership (GWP). This was a result of the collaboration of VWSA and GWP within the framework of DEVIWAS project. The leaders of the two parties highly appreciated the visit.

On 7 September, senior officers of the two associations had a meeting at the GWP office in Berlin. Dr. Michael Prange, Managing Director of GWP, cordially welcomed VWSA.

The leaders of the two parties reviewed and evaluated the activities operating from April to August 2015, which were successfully carried out and followed the right path.

Especially, the competency strengthening sector, networking, and international cooperation as well as VWSA status improvement significantly achieved beyond the plan. 

At the meeting, the president of VWSA announced the plan of establishing the Department of Policy and Department of International Cooperation. In addition, VWSA increased the number of staff in the Department of Training with 10 experts who are members of VWSA&;s branch.

Dr. Prange requested VWSA to clarify the proposal for the second phase of the project, which especially should be focused on capacity building, policy dialogues and technology transferring through mutual cooperation. 

On the same day, the group was honorably welcomed by Mr. Gunther Adler, State Secretary of Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety.

On this occasion, the president of VWSA briefly reported on the achievements of the DEVIWAS Project, the Programme Reform of Technical and Vocaltional Training in Vietnam (TVET) and preparation for the establishment of a Water Competence Center in Vietnam.

President of VWSA Cao Lai Quang affirmed: “the DEVIWAS project contributed to build and improve the image and reputation of VWSA to the local members and international partners”.

The competency has been improved especially within capacity training for members, policy dialogues and international cooperation.

Local and foreign partners recognized positive changes of VWSA. He expressed his appreciation to the German government to support Vietnam and VWSA in the environment, water supply and sewerage sector.

He also requested the German government to provide further support to Vietnam in the environment sector, climate change prevention and livelihood improvement. Moreover, green technology and advanced technology for environment as well as training experience and capacity building were other major concerns of the Vietnamese water sector.

Mr. Adler emphasized that “Vietnam is a strategic partner of German Government” and committed to support Vietnamese government in the aforementioned sectors. 

On 9 September, VWSA had a meeting with Dr. Hartmut Vorjohann, the Mayor of Dresden city. Dr. Hartmut presented the achievements of the city after the reunification, especially in the training and economic sector. He highly appreciated Vietnamese citizens who had contributed greatly to the city.

On this occasion, VWSA leader proposed cooperation with the city as followed:

-          Partnership between BUSADCO company and Dresden's Municipal Water and Sewerage Company.

-          Partnership between Dresden University of Technology and a high-ranking Vietnamese university, tentatively Ho Chi Minh University of Architecture.

-          Partnership between Dresden City and Ba Ria-Vung Tau City.

The Mayor agreed with the three proposals in principle. However, the third proposal needed further in-depth discussions. The first two should be prioritized at this stage.

On the next day, 10 September, the group was warmly welcomed by the mayor of Hof City, Mr. Harld Fichtner and Wilo company leaders in Hof City.

Mr. Harld acknowledged the contribution of Wilo for Hof city and was very glad to be updated by Mr. Quang-chairman of VWSA that Wilo had achieved significant success in Vietnam, that Wilo pumps have been used in one of the most important building in Vietnam, the parliament building, that 3 companies would buy Wilo pump just within this trip....

After the presentation on the potentials and economic status of the Hof city, VWSA proposed:

-          Partnership between Hof University of Applied Sciences and a high-ranking Vietnamese university which has the water and environment sector as its strength.

-          Partnership between Hof City and a city in Vietnam.

In fact, Hoff City spares an annual budget for this kind of cooperation with the focus on water and environment. There is a cooperation network of water competency in the city, which is seen as a great opportunity for the future cooperation with VWSA. 
 
The VWSA to visit WILO 

During the visit, the VWSA and GWP group visited four water plants in Germany, namely the Tegel Water Plant, LAR, Dresden's Municipal Water and Sewerage and Wilo companies. These are big companies with advanced water treatment technology as well as good canals management, human resource management, energy use efficiency and water supply safety.

At Wilo company, the VWSA group also witnessed the whole process of producing pumps with modern assembly line, high technology, strict quality monitoring and variety of pump types which sufficiently provide for water supply, sewerage, flooding prevention and wastewater treatment. These products were environmental friendly, energetic economically, safe and long-lasting.

At the end of this trip, 3 Vietnamese companies committed to use Wilo pump for their coming projects, they were: Phu Tho water company, Ba Ria Vung Tau Urban Sewerage and Development One Member Limited Company (BUSADCO) and Ba Ria Vung Tau Water Supply Company (BWACO). 

The 4-day official trip achieved significantly practical results which opened up great opportunities of cooperation between Vietnam and Germany in the water sector.
