Opening 37th WEDC International Conference “Sustainable Water and Sanitation Services for All in a Fast Changing World”

Hanoi, 15/9/2014 – 37th WEDC international Conference has been held from 15 – 19/9/2014 at National University of Civiil Engineering (NUCE), Hanoi, Vietnam. The Conference was co – hosted by Water, Enginereing and Development Centre (WEDC), Loughborough University (UK), National University of Civiil Engineering (NUCE), Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA). The Conference was co – sponsored by Ministry of Construction (MOC) and Ministry of Training and Education (MOET).

Organized since the 1970s, WEDC International  Conference was organized frequently in Africa and Asia. This year, the Conference attracted the participation of nearly 400 members, from policy makers, specialists, social activists to representatives from water, sanitation ad community health projects in Vietnam and 40 countries internationally.

150 reports have been presented at the Conference within 3 days, from 15 – 17/9/2014. Besides, 30 exhibition booths have been arranged inside NUCE during 5 day - conference, which was an opportunity for national and international enterprises exhibiting their products and services in the field of water and sanitation sector; finding new partners and potential customers in Vietnam and abroad. Capacity development workshops and other events have been organized on 18 – 19/9/2014 for experiences sharing in the water and sanitation sector. 

The 37th Conference has been organized while Vietnam and the world is facing rapid development, urbanization, climate change and increasing demand from human; which require innovations in awareness, roles and responsibilities of all nations. Currently, policies and targets for the period after 2015 have been developed to replace Millennium Development Goals, including the target “by 2030, people can get access to water and sanitation”. This requires specialist in the water and sanitation sector to get update on skills and knowledge to deal with upcoming challenges.

WEDC Conference aims at providing specific knowledge in the field of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). This year, participants from low and middle income countries have presentations on: Sanitation and Wastewater Management; Water Supply and Treatment, Solid Wastes and Wastewater Management in Urban areas; Financial Management; Policy Development; Capacity Development, Community – Based Approaching Methodologies, Climate Change Adaption, etc.  

Some important topics relating water and sanitation in developing countries, countries which are vulnerable by climate change have been discussed at the Conference, such as sustainable water supply for rural areas, re-use of sludge and wastewater in agriculture, Children and WASH, modern hygiene techniques, natural risks management, etc.

37th WEDC International Conference is an important event for the water sector in Vietnam, providing an opportunity for policy makers, managers and experts in the water and sanitation sector to approach international experiences and new technologies.
