Ho Chi Minh City, 9th November, 2016 –The Vietnam Water Supply and Sewerage Association (VWSA) in partnership with German Water Partnership (GWP) and the German Development Cooperation GIZ held the German – Vietnamese Water Forum this afternoon. Mr. Gunther Adler, State Secretary of the German Federal Ministry of Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) and Mrs. Phan Thi My Linh, Vice Ministerof Construction of Vietnam delivered welcome and opening remarks at the Forum.
Objective of the Forum is to provide a platform for the participants to understand more about the trends and developments in Germany and Vietnam&;s water sectors, to present ongoing cooperation as well as opportunities for future German – Vietnamese cooperation in the sector as well as to facilitate networking and match-making among organizations and companies from the two countries.
At present, Viet Nam has 800 cities nationwide and the urbanization rate is 36.5%. It is forecasted that the number of population living in urban areas will reach 44 million in 2020 and 52 million in 2050.Together with high urbanization rate, climate change, more frequent and serious urban floods and increased pollution pose significant challenges for water and wastewater sector in Viet Nam. To address these challenges, GIZ through the Wastewater Management Programme and the Flood Proofing and Drainage for Medium-sized Coastal Cities in Viet Nam for Adaptation to Climate Change Programme has been supporting the national and provincial governments to establish a comprehensive legal and policy framework for the urban drainage/sewerage and flood risk management sector. The aim is to build resilient cities to the negative impacts of climate change.
“For economic, social and ecological reasons, it is imperative that we enhance resource efficiency. Interlinked and intelligent infrastructures for water supply and wastewater management, as well as sustainable urban planning, are of the utmost importance in this regard“ - said Mr. Gunther Adler.
The Forum brought together 120 participants from BMUB,MoC,German Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City, Australian Embassy, Belgium Embassy, GWP, GIZ, VWSA, German businesses, water and wastewater related companies of German and Viet Nam.

A new GIZ and MoCpublication “Resilient Cities in Viet Nam: A guide for planning urban environment programs” was introduced at the Forum side event. This publication reflects the experiences gained during long years of operating in the urban environment sector in Viet Nam.
In recent years, VWSA has focused on human resources development, technology promotion and policy advocacy. In this regard, VWSA has been strengthening cooperation with GWP through DEVIWASiii, GIZ through WMP, and other donors and international organizations to fulfil its objectives. In particular, VWSA is working closely with GWP in fostering cooperation between German – Vietnamese businesses, investment promotion, technology transfer, knowledge and experiences exchange.
